How does the Parasympathetic Nervous System affect the Body?

The Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) is one of two parts of the autonomic nervous system. The PNS controls the body when at rest and is responsible for the “rest and digest” function. The PNS originates in the medulla.The parasympathetic system counterbalances the effects of the sympathetic system, helping to maintain overall equilibrium.

  • decreases heart rate
  • constriction of bronchial in the lungs
  • constriction of the eyes
  • relaxation of muscles
  • increase urinary output
